Being a mother and a wife is difficult. But being a mother and wife in a home that serves God can surprisingly be even harder at times. Not only do I have to make sure that my home is taken care of but when someone in my household is down and out I have to make sure that they know they can turn to God for whatever they may need, I have to pray on a daily basis that they are okay. Today I will talk about two examples of when this was the strongest in my life, one example of when my husband needed my support and one when my daughter did.

Proverbs 12:4 says, “An excellent wife is the crown of her husband…”  Ephesians 5:22-23 says, “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.”  The bible clearly states that as a wife you must submit to your husband, for he is the head of the household as The Lord is the head of the church. As a wife I have the responsibility to make sure that my husband submits to God and I should submit to him.

My husband is a follower of Christ, however, he currently is not actively attending church. I don’t fear that his love for God is not there, but I do fear that he may not be obedient to the things that God has told him to do. And if we all know one thing, we know that we must be obedient to the word the God has given us. As a leader of our church, it is very hard to not have my husband there with me. Especially when people who genuinely care for him ask questions and worry about him. But I cannot allow this to break me down, because I can not allow the Lord to leave my household. I have to be there as my husband’s support not only in a worldly sense, but I have to be his voice in the spiritual world as well. The bible says in Proverbs 14:1 “The wisest of women builds her house, but folly (foolish) with her own hands tears it down”. I can’t allow my home to fall down spiritually, I have to be there holding it together, no matter how much it may hurt or drain me, when my husband can’t. As wives we have to be there to show our husbands that they have purpose and that God will not allow us to fall and diminish in his eyes. We need to pray for our husbands so God can hear our cries and break whatever chains are holding them back. We need to encourage our husbands and make sure they can focus on the promises God has given our families.

Isaiah 66:13 says, “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” In this verse God is tell us that as we comfort our children during whatever they may be going through, a rough night, a boo boo, or just not getting something that they want; God is also there to comfort us in those times. Just about 2 weeks ago my 5 year old daughter came home from school and told me that she hated her self. Imagine my shock and confusion when those words left her mouth. I couldn’t do anything but cry. She proceeded to tell me that she wanted to be baptized (something she learned in bible study) because she wanted to be new, she didn’t like the way she looked; because she was different from the kids in  her predominately Caucasian school. She said told me that God did not love her and she didn’t know why He made her that way. I was crushed and heartbroken that she even thought that way. I proceeded to tell her that God did love her and he made her that way because she is special, I told her God makes us all beautiful and she is a beautiful little girl. She wasn’t having it, and refused to listen. Upon further conversation is was revealed that kids at school (mind you these are 5 and 6 year olds) were calling her ugly. I could not believe my ears. My husband was able to break things down for her as to why she looks different and get her to understand that she is beautiful and she should never think other wise. I was completely broken at that moment because how many stories do we hear of children hurting themselves even at the young age of 5, because of bullying? I was hurt, scared, confused, disappointed and sad. If there was never a time for me to need the comfort of God it was in that moment. I needed his guidance in how to speak to my daughter, and I just needed to pray that my daughter could understand how special she was to God and beautiful she was. She came out of her room and hugged me and told me that she didn’t hate herself and she knew she was beautiful. I knew that God had heard my silent prayers and that He is protecting her at school when I can’t. In this situation I have to put my faith and trust in God that my daughter can hear Him when He calls her and that she can trust in His word just as much as I do. All I can do is continue to encourage her and teach her all that God has in store for her. So for all of you mommies, if you take anything from this please let it be that you talk to your children, no matter how old, especially if they are around other children; make sure that they know that God loves them and that they are special in every single way. Hug them and tell them you love them and that that are beautiful just the way they are. Teach them that God will always be there when they are feeling down and to just turn to Him when they feel they have no where else to go.

These are just a couple of things that I go through as a mother and a wife, but I know that at the end of the day God is always going to make sure that my family is standing firm; as long as my family continues to trust and serve The Lord. I know that God is by my side whether I am struggling with something at work, something at home or something as a leader at our church. I know that I can always turn to Him and He will always be there to guide me and keep me standing.
I hope that my words and experiences can help you to stay strong and trusting while balancing life and church. Always remember that there is no greater love than the love of God and He will never throw something your way that you can’t handle.

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."  - Joshua 24:15
